Somehow I survived the gigantic workload that was thrust upon me these last few weeks, and as of my last presentation monday I am free!  These weeks have had me staying in and working so much, but it was very fulfilling to see the semester work come together.  Now that they are done, there’s a rush for me to hang out and say bye to the people who have made this journey so special.  It amazes me how close I’ve grown with some people here, and Im going to miss them terribly when I have to leave.  Though, like my host mother says, its not goodbye forever because I will return.  I really believe that I will find myself here again, because it feels like a second home. So cheers to a wonderful semester, and I will be making the most of the farra these last few days, each night chasing the sun.

It is nearing the end of April, and so the school year is winding down, and my semester abroad is winding down.  There are many assignments, presentations, exams, and final projects that lie ahead of me.  It is actually quite overwhelming.  It has taken a lot of will power to cut down on fun activities and focus on schoolwork.  This weekend, I have an extra large workload as I was sick for most of this week.  I got food poisoning on Monday, which has made the week very difficult to manage.  At my lowest point, I was too uncomfortable to stand, and too uncomfortable to lie down, I just wanted out.  Somehow, I made it through, and I’m feeling a lot better now, ready to take on these last few weeks.  

Street naming in the U.S. is typically done using landmarks, destination, distinguished individuals, and themes.  Street naming in Quito includes all the former, along with important dates from its history.  

I live between streets that are called Avenida 10 de agosto and Avenida 6 de diciembre.  Here’s three streets that I’ve always  wanted to know more about. 

Avenida 10 de agosto - Ecuador gains its independence on August 10, 1809.

Avenida 6 de diciembre - Quito was founded on December 6, 1534.

Avenida Eloy Alfaro -  José Eloy Alfaro Delgado wasPresident of Ecuador from 1895 to 1901 and from 1906 to 1911.  

From wiki:  He became one the strongest opponents of pro-Catholic conservative President Gabriel Garcia Moreno. For his central role in the Liberal Revolution of 1895 and for having fought conservatism for almost 30 years, he is known as the Viejo Luchador.

His major legacies are considered to be national unity, and the integrity of Ecuador’s borders; the increased secularization of the country; and the modernization of Ecuadorian society through the introduction of new ideas, education, and systems of public transport and communication. He completed the engineering feat of the Transandino railway linking Guayaquil with Quito. 

Taxi’s are a peculiar thing in Ecuador. They offer convenience, are generally inexpensive, and sometimes sketchy.

Upon arrival in January, the university briefed us on what to look for in a taxi:  orange license plates, registration number, and a cap.  Finding these perfect cabs is generally easy.  However, when pressed for time I’ve hopped into a few sketch cabs, that luckily have delivered me to my destination safely.  I tend to opt for a cab ride to the bus terminal in the mornings, when I’m looking to save time in getting to school (fares clock in at $1.50 or less).  It’s hard to resist taking a cab when they are so plentiful in the morning. 

One time when I was in a rush, a blue car pulled up and asked where I was going.  I quickly evaluated the cab, it violated all points that I’m supposed to look for in a legitimate cab, and so I got in.  Upon telling him directions, the driver asked where I was from.  A red flag went up in in my mind, knowing that he had identified me as a foreigner, but I made it to my destination safely.  There was another time that a lady in a grey car pulled up, and I was skeptical, but got in thinking she looked nice enough.  This cab ride was one of the most talkative ones I have experienced and I enjoyed her company.  I understand the importance of looking for a “perfect” taxi, but I also recognize that other taxi drivers are nice people just looking to make a living, and might not have the means to pay for official registration. 

When in a rush, the taxi’s here have saved me.  I think its been four times now, that I’ve asked the cab driver to take me all the way to school in the neighboring valley, because I would have been late otherwise.  Even this long expensive taxi ride, tops out at just $10.

Also, ever since I’ve gotten my haircut (short, and styled) I haven’t been asked where I’m from.  Perhaps my improved spanish and looks are letting me pass for Ecuadorian?

I`d like to consider this the halfway point in my semester. My blog has been on hiatus but for this second season I’ve re-committed to sharing my experiences with those back home, and whoever else is interested.

These past few weeks have a been a whirlwind of midterms, projects, presentations, travel, and planning.  Its a tough balance trying to live in the present, while planning for the summer and next semester.  Last week I received an offer for a Resident Assistantship in Boston University’s South Campus.  Today, I called in to accept.

This week I am presenting on the Sea Turtle Act, in my Políticas Ambientales class.  

There are 4 main species of turtle that inhabit the Ecuadorian coast and Galápagos.

Ficha Técnica para

La Convención Interamericana para la Protección y Conservación de las Tortugas Marinas.

1.  Antecedentes: Derecho del Mar de 10 del diciembre de 1982, con respecto a la conservación y ordenación de los recursos marinos vivos. Declaración de Río de 1992 sobre el Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo. Código de Conducta para la Pesca Responsable, adoptado por la Conferencia de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO), en su 28a. Sesión de 1995.

2. Fecha de adopción: 1 diciembre 1996.

3.  Fecha de entrada en vigor: mayo de 2001.

4. Fecha en que fue ratificado por el Ecuador: 6 octubre 2000.

5. Características: La duración es indeterminada.  Es cerrado, esta convención estará abierta, Caracas, Venezuela, a la firma por los estados en el continente americano a partir del 1 de diciembre de 1996 hasta el 31 de diciembre de 1998.   No es vinculante.

6. Objetivo: El objetivo de esta Convención es promover la protección, conservación y recuperación de las poblaciones de tortugas marinas y de los hábitats de los cuales dependen, basándose en los datos científicos más fidedignos disponibles y considerando las características ambientales, socioeconómicas y culturales de las Partes.

7. Principales Contenidos:

- La prohibición de captura, retención o muerte incidental de tortugas marinas, así como del comercio doméstico de las mismas, de sus huevos, partes o productos.

-El cumplimiento de lo establecido en la Convención de CITES en relación al comercio internacional de tortugas marinas, sus huevos, partes o productos (como el carey).

-Restricción de actividades humanas que puedan afecten a las tortugas marinas en períodos de reproducción, incubación y migración.

-La protección, conservación y según proceda, la restauración del hábitat y los sitios establecidos y designados como áreas protegidas.

-Fomentar la investigación dirigida a la reproducción experimental, cría y reintroducción.

-La promoción de la educación ambiental y difusión de información, con el fin de estimular la participación de las instituciones gubernamentales, ONGs y del público en general.

-La reducción al mínimo posible de la captura, daño o muerte incidental de las tortugas marinas durante las actividades pesqueras, así como el desarrollo, mejoramiento y utilización de artes, dispositivos y técnicas apropiados, incluidos los Dispositivos Excluidores de Tortugas (conocidos como DETs)

8. Órganos de la Convención:  Conferencias de los partes.   El convención se creó una oficina de secretario para administrar los conferencias y informes.  Tambien crearon un comité consultivo de expertos y un comité sientifico.

9. Principios ambientales reconocidos:  los principios principales son de sostenibilidad y precaución.  Hay información científico que dice que las tortugas son en peligro, pero hay falta de información estandarizada de las tortugas.  El principio de sostenibilidad es evidente en el deseo de proteger a las especies y mantener la diversidad biológica en las especies de tortugas.

Resultados del tratado en Ecuador:

 Ecuador ha llevado a cabo numerosas actividades específicas que tienen asistido durante todo el proceso de planificación y el aumento de conocimiento de la conservación de las tortugas marinas. Uno de estos actividades fue el 3 º Simposio Regional de Tortugas Marinas en el la provincia de Santa Elena. Este evento contó con el apoyo por diversas instituciones gubernamentales. De esta manera, el país está desempeñando un papel activo en las medidas legislativas y haciendo esfuerzos para implementar acciones a favor del mar de conservación de tortugas y de gestión.

En el pasado, la tortuga verde más importante (Cheloniamydas) sitio de anidación en el Pacífico Oriental ha sido Michoacán, México. Sin embargo, la sobre explotación de este especie ha causado esta población a reducirse drásticamente. Hoy en día, las Galápagos son consideradas como uno de los sitios de anidación más importantes de la tortuga verde en el Océano Pacífico Oriental y su población se consider ser estable. Este programa supervisa las tendencias de la población y estado de conservación de esta especie cada año, que nos ayuda a obtener una major comprensión de la población las tendencias y sus amenazas.
